A Model Message

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: Sent Scripture: Acts 2:14–41

“In the midst of a generation screaming for answers, Christians are stuttering.” Howard Hendricks

You can be shaking like a leaf and still be used by God to shake the world!

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:1–5, ESV)

God uses His Scriptures, communicated through His Servants, empowered by His Spirit to change the world one life at a time.

For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:21, ESV)

Learning From Peter’s First Sermon

  1. He Started Where They Were (14-21)
  • He Listened
  • He Explained
  • He used Scripture

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, ESV)

  1. He Pointed Them To Christ (22-36)
  • Christ’s Ministry
  • Christ’s Crucifixion
  • Christ’s Burial
  • Christ’s Resurrection
  • Christ’s Ascension
  • Christ’s Position
  1. He Guided Their Response (37-41)
  • Conviction

There is no Conversion without Conviction

Two Things That Peter Said Cut Them To The Heart:

  1. They realized they had been Wrong about Christ
  1. They realized they were Responsible for the death of Jesus.
  • Repentance and Acceptance
  • The Gift of the Holy Spirit
  • Baptism

Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,” (Acts 3:19, ESV)

but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.” (Acts 26:20, ESV)

You can be shaking like a leaf and still be used by God to shake the world!
God uses His Scriptures, communicated through His Servants, empowered by His Spirit to change the world one life at a time.

Making It Personal:

  • Are you genuinely a member of the family of God? Have you personally turned from your sin, trusted in Christ’s provision through the cross and surrendered your life to His rule and reign?
  • Have you publicly testified to your faith through obedience to Christ’s command to be baptized as a believer?
  • Who are you relating to and praying for in the hope that they may come to a saving, transforming faith in Jesus Christ?
  • How will you engage in the B.L.E.S.S. practices this week?
  • Who can you share these truths with?
