Living Like a Christian
1 John 5:13-21
- Know you have eternal life (vs13)
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.” John 10:28-29
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39
a.) Preach the gospel to yourself everyday
b.) You cannot lose your salvation because you did nothing to earn it. If you could lose your salvation, you would.
Have confidence (vs14)
- Know God’s will (vs14)
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10
“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:17
- Know God hears us (vs15)
- Know God’s will is accomplished (vs15)
- Pray for others (vs16)
- Sin that does not lead to death: sins that you repent from and ask forgiveness for
- Sin that leads to death: Unrepentant sin
“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness but is guilty of an eternal sin.” Mark 3:28-29
- Know Christians do not live in unrepentant sin (vs18)
- Know we are God’s children (vs19)
a.) Christians are different than the world
- Know God gave you understanding (vs20)
- Know the truth (vs20)
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” John 14:1-3
“There is no peace like the peace of those whose minds are possessed with full assurance that they have known God, and God has known them, and that this relationship guarantees God’s favor to them in life, through death and on forever.” – J.I. Packer
- The enemy of knowing God is idolatry (vs21)
a.) An idol is anything we look to for satisfaction in the place of God.
“We make a god out of whatever we find most joy in. So, find your joy in God and be done with all idolatry.” - John Piper
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15
