He Is Involved

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: The Journey of Faith Topic: faith, Journey Scripture: Hebrews 2:5–18

Series: The Journey of Faith
Message: He Is Involved
Scripture: Hebrews 2:5-18

Perspective matters!

Our perspective on the pain, difficulties, and challenges of life matters!

Hebrews reminds us that life is a journey.

These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.” (Hebrews 11:13, ESV)

The best way to take this journey is by looking to Jesus.

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2, ESV)

Our Calling

  1. What we were Made To Be (5-8)
  1. What has Happened To Us (8)

“Men and women were meant to have dominion over everything—but they have not. They are creatures who are frustrated by their circumstances, defeated by their temptations and surrounded by their own weaknesses. The ones who should be free are bound; the ones who should be rulers are slaves.” William Barclay

Christ’s Intervention

Four Pictures Of Jesus:

  1. He is a King who got involved (9)
  • Jesus just didn’t Look down, He Came down
  1. He is a Founder who saves (10, 14-15)

Greek word: “archegon” – The “hero” of a city, who founded it often gave it his name and became its guardian.

Can also be translated: “pioneer”—one who opens the way for others to follow.

It has been said that we have a “fear of death” that deeply affects us even as we try to repress it throughout our lives.

When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?'” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55, ESV)

  1. He is a Brother who is not ashamed of us (11-13)

Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” (John 20:17, ESV)

  1. He is the High Priest who helps us (16-18)
  • Faithful as man’s Sin-bearer
  • Faithful in Representing us to the Father

Our Response

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2, ESV)

The sight of who Jesus is For Us, changes us to become who Jesus wants to be In Us

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20, ESV)

Look To Jesus:

  • For Salvation

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”” (Romans 10:13, ESV)

  • For Leadership

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”” (Matthew 4:19, ESV)

  • For Empowerment

For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” (Colossians 1:29, ESV)

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,” (Ephesians 3:20, ESV)

  • For Help in our struggles

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15–16, ESV)

The sight of who Jesus is for us, changes us to become who Jesus wants us to be For Others

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34–35, ESV)

Looking To Jesus Fills Us With:

  • Compassion
  • Forgiveness
  • Generosity

Making it Personal

  • Have you come to Jesus, entrusting yourself to Him as Savior and Lord?
  • Does your response to Jesus match the greatness of who He is?
  • What is your next step in response to these truths?
  • Who can you share these truths with?
