The Greatness of Christ

but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31)

What Does John Mean by “Believe”?

  1. To Acknowledge truth as truth
  2. To trust, rely upon, to derive Confidence in someone or something

John’s gospel is no mere biography, it is an Invitation

“The Gospel of John is an invitation to believe in the Son of God, to become His disciples, to deepen our understanding of His identity and mission, to grow in maturity, and to join Him in tending His sheep.” Chuck Swindoll

The Greatness Of Christ’s Person (1-3)

  • Eternally Preexistent
  • Eternally In Relationship
  • Eternally God
  • Eternally Creator

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16–17)

Important Distinction:  Every other belief system has to Devalue Jesus

The Greatness Of Christ’s Light (4-13)

  • Christ, the light Revealed (4-5,9)
  • Christ, the light Rejected (5b,10-11)
  • Christ, the light Received (12)

The Greatness Of The Good News (12-14)

  • The greatness of its Power

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)

  • The greatness of its Simplicity
  • The greatness of its Benefits

Believe + Receive = Become

The Greatness Of Christ’s Uniqueness (15-18)

  • Unique Origin (15)
  • Unique channel of God’s Blessings (16-17)
  • Unique Revelation of God

Appropriate Responses To The Greatness of Christ

  1. Worship Him
  2. Receive Him
  3. Follow Him
  4. Trust Him

Making It Personal:

  • To you, “Who is Jesus?” How did you come to that conclusion?
  • What does “believe” mean to you? How does your belief impact your daily life?
  • How are you currently responding to the greatness of Jesus Christ?
  • Who can you share these truths with?
