Love Like Jesus Loved

Love Trusts

1 Corinthians 13:7 & Luke 23:46

Would you still trust God if…?

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:7)

This does not mean that love is Gullible

Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16)

But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people” (John 2:24)

Some take the phrase, “believes all things” to be understood as love believes the Best about others

It can also be can be understood as “love believes/trusts always”, pointing us to the Perseverance of love’s faith

“Love has a tenacity in the present, buoyed by its absolute confidence in the future, that enables it to live in every kind of circumstance and continually pour itself out in behalf of others.”  Gordon Fee

The Trusting Love of Jesus

When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.” (1 Peter 2:23)

  1. Jesus trusted that God Was There
  1. Jesus trusted in God As Father
  1. Jesus trusted in Life After Death
  1. Jesus trusted in the Father’s Love
  1. Jesus trusted that his death would Atone For Sin

What enabled Jesus to trust as He hung on the cross?

The answer is: Love

and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”” (Matthew 3:17)

He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”” (Matthew 17:5)

you loved me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24)

Having this kind of love starts with Knowing how much God loves you

for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” (John 16:27)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“The deepest motive for believing is the awareness of being loved by God.”  Lewis Smedes

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” (Luke 23:46)

Father, into your hands I commit my…

Making It Personal:

  • How have I responded to the love of Jesus toward me? Have I personally repented of my sin and placed my faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross and surrendered my life completely to Him as my Lord?
  • How can I focus on and remind myself of the “love of God toward me” this week?
  • What specifically do I need to keep entrusting to God and his power, love and wisdom?
  • Who can I share these truths with?
