A 6:7 Awakening

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: Sent Scripture: Acts 6:1–7

An individual's or a church's life will not naturally or automatically become great. It must become focused and organized for maximum impact.

1. Problem (1)

Success does not mean an Absence of problems; it may bring a whole new set of problems.

There was a legitimate need that needed to be addressed.

What are the “opportunities” God has placed or allowed in your life that are brilliantly disguised as problems?

2. Priorities (2,4)

They Knew their priorities.

Good can become the enemy of God’s Best in our lives.

Every need may not necessarily be a Call from God on your life personally.

“The secret to ‘No’ is in a stronger ‘Yes.”

What are God’s priorities for your life? Have you said “yes” to God’s best that can enable you to say “no” to the rest?

3. Partnership (3-5)

“For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;” (Romans 12:4–6, ESV)

How are you participating in the life and ministry of God’s church? Have you found your place of serving? Are there others around you that may need you to be used by God to help “call them out”?

4. Product/Result (6-7)

  • People were empowered
  • Minisry was accomplished
  • Leaders were developed
  • God’s Kingdom was expanded

What is God doing through your life? What are the points of celebration? Are there areas of increased impact that God wants to develop in and through your life?

Three Focuses for The Church

1. Recommit to Building 6:3 Disciples.

  • Men of Good Repute.

“Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” (1 Peter 2:10–12, ESV)

  • Full of the Spirit

"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,” (Ephesians 5:18, ESV)

  • Full of Wisdom

“Wisdom is a way of seeing and understanding the world, ourselves, other people, and the Lord God. Wisdom is a way of engaging the world, ourselves, others, and the Lord.” David Powlinson

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17, ESV)

“Our great fear should not be that people leave our church but that they would stay in our church and remain unchanged.” Jim Cymbala

2. Recommit to Becoming 6:4 Leaders.

“The devil doesn’t have to destroy you; he only has to distract you.”

“Prayer is one half of our ministry, and it gives to the other half all of its power and success.” Charles Bridges

Exodus 18: Moses and Jethro

“Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God, and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do. Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.” (Exodus 18:19–21, ESV)

3. Recommit to Believing God for a 6:7 Awakening.

6:3 + 6:4 = 6:7

We are all praying for the fruits of revival. Maybe God is calling us to cultivate the roots of revival.

Making It Personal:

  • How have you responded to the gospel of Jesus Christ? Have you personally turned from your sin, trusted in Christ’s provision through the cross, and surrendered your life to His rule and reign?
  • Prayerfully review the questions above. What is the Holy Spirit communicating to you as you review and reflect?
  • Does your life increasingly reflect the marks of a 6:3 disciple?
  • Are you increasingly focusing your life on prayer and the Word?
  • Will you join in crying out to God in prayer for a 6:7 awakening?
  • Who needs to hear about Jesus through you?
  • Who can you share these truths with?
