Breaking Down Walls

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: The Gospel Story

The Gospel Story
Breaking Down Walls
Ephesians 2:11-20

Paul reminds us of God’s great desire to bring us all together in a unity that will enable us to do more together than we can ever dream possible

In Order To Experience This Supernatural Unity We Must Remember:

  1. We Were Removed From Christ (11-12)

Remembering our common need can become a basis of unity

Apart From God’s Work In Our Lives, We Are:

  • Without Christ
  • Without Citizenship
  • Without Covenants
  • Without Confidence
  1. We Were Reconciled To Christ (13)

Far Away   -   Brought Near

The prerequisite to unity, to true fellowship with others is the establishment of Unity with God

  1. We Are Related In Christ (14-18)

The Barriers:

  • The Wall
  • The Law

for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” (Galatians 3:26–29, ESV)

The Blessings:

  • Peace (17)
  • Access (18)

Clarification:  In coming to Christ we will still be Distinctive, we will no longer be Divided!

Three Pictures To Describe Our Unity (19-22)

  1. Fellow Citizens – We are part of God’s kingdom
  2. God’s Household – We are part of God’s family
  3. A Building – We are part of God’s purpose

you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:5, ESV)

Jesus As The Cornerstone

The significance of the cornerstone in that day:

  • All the measurements of the building are taken from the cornerstone
  • All the weight of the building rests upon the cornerstone
  • Everything in the building ties together at the cornerstone

To truly experience a supernatural unity we must look:

  • Beyond Ourselves
  • Beyond Others
  • To Jesus Christ

Three Application Questions

Q: Why Don’t We Experience This Unity?
A: Sin

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5–7, ESV)

Q: What Is The Solution?
A: Confess

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8–9, ESV)

Q: What Is My Response?

God’s great desire is to bring us all together in a unity that will enable us to do more together than we can ever dream possible!

Making It Personal:

  • Spend some time reflecting on my condition apart from Christ.
  • Am I truly reconciled to Christ by trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ on my behalf as the sole basis for my relationship with God?
  • Does unity mark my relationships with other believers?
  • How am I contributing to the work of the body of Christ with my resources, my time, my talents, and my energy?
  • Who can you share these truths with?
