The Lord's Supper

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Topic: communion Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:17–34

Communion Sunday
The Lord’s Supper
1 Corinthians 11:17-34

We must avoid two errors: over-exalting and under-valuing the Lord’s Supper

The Purpose of the Lord’s Supper

  1. To remember the Presence of the Lord (20-24)

for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”” (Hebrews 13:5, ESV)

Not a moment of silence for the dead, but an act of Fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ

  1. To remember the Provision of the Lord (24)
  1. To remember the Passion of the Lord (26)
  1. To remember the Purpose of the Lord (29)

Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” (1 Corinthians 10:17, ESV)

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13, ESV)

The Preparation for the Lord’s Supper

  1. It is for the Redeemed

No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” (1 Corinthians 10:20–21, ESV)

  1. It is for the Reconciled (18)

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:18, ESV)

  1. It is for the Reverent (20-22)
  1. It is for the Repentant (28-34)

The Participation in the Lord’s Supper

Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” (1 Corinthians 11:28, ESV)

  1. It is a time of Covenant (25)
  2. It is a time of Communion (26)

We Have A Common:

  • Love
  • Respect
  • Commitment to Jesus Christ

so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:5, ESV)

My Next Step Today Is To…

  • Become a Follower of Jesus Christ by trusting in the sufficiency of the shed blood of Jesus and surrendering my life to Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord
  • Publicly identify with Christ as my Lord and Savior by being baptized
  • Become a member of the First Baptist Family
  • As a Christian, ask God to reveal to me any sin in my life, turn from that sin, trusting in Christ’s forgiving blood and renew my focus to live for Him by His power and grace
