He is Supreme

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: The Journey of Faith Topic: faith, Journey Scripture: Hebrews 1

Series: The Journey of Faith
Message: He Is Supreme
Scripture: Hebrews 1

Why is life so hard?

The book of Hebrews answers that in part by telling us that life is a journey.

The best way to take this journey is by Fixing our eyes on Jesus.

Background:

The Supremacy of Christ

  1. Jesus is greater than the Prophets (1-3)

Jesus Is:

  • Heir
  • Creator
  • The Radiance of God’s glory
  • The Exact Representation of God’s nature
  • Sustainer
  • Redeemer

Prophets Gave the Word of God, Jesus Is the Word of God!

  1. Jesus is greater than the Angels (4-14)
  • Because He is a Son (4-5)
  • Because He has superior Dignity (6-7)
  • Because of His important Role (8-9)
  • Because He is Unchanging (10-12)
  • Because He has Authority (13-14)

“Without denigrating the vital role of angels in the service of God, the writer of Hebrews puts them in their place in comparison with the person and work of the Son.”  Chuck Swindoll

What Do I Do In Response?
Hebrews 2:1-4

  1. Don’t drift - Obsess

“Think about this, if the distance between the earth and the sun (92 million miles) was the thickness of one sheet of paper, then the distance from the earth to the nearest star would be a stack of paper 70 feet high. And the diameter of our galaxy would be a stack of paper 310 miles high. Our galaxy is only a speck of dust in the universe, and if there is a person who holds all that together by the word of his power … is this the kind of person you ask into your life to be your personal assistant?” Elisabeth Elliot

Obsess on the greatness and grace of Jesus Christ and you will become more and more the person He created and called you to be!

  1. Don’t Neglect

“How can you live with the terrifying thought that the hurricane has become human, that fire has become flesh, that life itself came to life and walked into our midst? Christianity either means that, or it means nothing. It is either the most devastating disclosure of the deepest reality in the world, or it’s a sham, a nonsense, a bit of deceitful play-acting. Most of us, unable to cope with saying either of those things, condemn ourselves to live in the shallow world in between.”  N.T. Wright

For Some Of You:

  • What are you waiting for?
  • Does my response to Jesus match the greatness of His glory and grace?

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:2–3, NIV84)

Making it Personal

  • Does my response to Jesus match the greatness of His glory and grace?
  • How will you “obsess” on the greatness and grace of Jesus Christ this week?
  • What is your next step in response to these truths?
  • Who can you share these truths with?
