Jesus, Our King

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: It's All About Jesus Scripture: Colossians 1:13–14

Series: Christmas: It’s All About Jesus
Message: Jesus, Our King
Scripture: Colossians 1:13-14

“Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King!”

“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”” (Matthew 2:2)

The New-Born King

  1. His coming was Foretold

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” (Micah 5:2)

And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever, just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.” (Daniel 2:44–45)

  1. His coming is Threatening

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;” (Matthew 2:3)

“You and I are kingdom oriented. We are always in pursuit of and in service to some kind of kingdom. We are either living in allegiance to the King of kings, celebrating our welcome into his kingdom of glory and grace, or we are anointing ourselves as kings and working to set up our own little kingdoms of one.” Paul Tripp

False teaching and thinking about Jesus doesn’t seek to deny Him, but to Dethrone Him.  It will allow Jesus to be prominent, but not Preeminent!

  1. His Kingdom is Different

“… just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand…” (Daniel 2:44)

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”” (John 18:36)

  1. His Kingdom is Eternal

And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,”(Daniel 2:44)

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”” (Luke 1:32–33)

But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.” (Hebrews 1:8)

On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:16)

  1. His Kingdom is Transforming

Four Thanksgivings That Transform Our Lives

  • He Delivered us
  • He Transferred us
  • He Redeemed us
  • He has Forgiven us

Responding To The King

  1. Recognize and Honor Him as King

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9–11)

Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,” (Hebrews 12:28)

  1. Repent and Believe to become a part of His Kingdom

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”” (John 3:3)

  1. Live For the King and His Kingdom

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)

  1. Share the good news about His Kingdom

But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” (Acts 8:12)

proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.” (Acts 28:31)

Making It Personal:

  • Are you truly a part of the Kingdom of God?
  • Where do you feel most threatened by the Kingdom of God - seeking your own kingdom instead?
  • How are you currently responding to the King?
  • Who’s Your One? Who can you share the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, with this Christmas?  How will you share the good news of the Kingdom with them?
  • Who can I share these truths with?
