Don’t Just Show Up – Grow Up

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)

Grow More Like Christ

  • Through Personal Time with God
  • Through Learning with others

Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;” (1 Timothy 4:7)

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” (Mark 1:35)

DEFINITION: “A devotional time is a daily time I set aside to be alone with God to get to know Him through the Bible and prayer.”

The Purpose Of A Daily Quiet Time

  1. To give Devotion to God

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.” (Psalm 29:2)

  • God Deserves our devotion!

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”” (Revelation 4:11)

  • God Desires our devotion!

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:23)

  1. To get Direction from God

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.” (Psalm 25:4)

Two Things To Do In A Quiet Time:

  • Consider your Way

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)

  • Commit your Day

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” (Psalm 37:5)

  1. To gain Delight in God

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)

  1. To grow Daily like God

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.” (Romans 8:29)

We become like those we spend time with!

How To Begin A Daily Quiet Time

  1. Select a specific Time

"Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees." Corrie Ten Boom

  1. Choose a special Place
  1. Gather the Resources you’ll need
  1. Begin with the right attitudes
  • Reverence

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10)

  • Expectancy

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” (Psalm 119:18)

  • Willingness To Obey

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

  1. Follow a simple Plan

Scripture

Observation

Application

Prayer

“You'll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” John C. Maxwell

A 30-Day Challeng: By God’s grace, out of a desire to know Him more intimately, love Him more passionately and obey Him more completely, I purpose to spend some time alone with the Lord in His Word and in prayer, every day for the next thirty days.
