As we follow Christ, we come to understand that we were Made For A Mission
“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.” (John 17:15–18)
“But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles” (Galatians 1:15–16a)
“And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
Everybody an Everyday Missionary
Following Jesus on Mission
1. What Jesus Did (35)
• He Went
• He Communicated
• He Met Needs
Like Jesus, we are called to go and share the gospel in Word and Deed
2. What Jesus Saw (36)
• He saw their Needs
• He saw their Condition
• He saw their Potential
As we follow Christ, He will open our Eyes To See as He sees!
3. What Jesus Felt (36)
“To be deeply moved”
“His heart broke” (The Message Paraphrase)
“For the love of Christ controls us,” (2 Corinthians 5:14a)
As we follow Christ, He will open our Hearts To Feel as he feels!
“Break my heart over the things that break the heart of God!”
4. What Jesus Said (37-38)
- An Abundant Harvest
- A Labor Shortage
- A Prayer Priority
Jesus didn’t instruct them to pray that the World would come to the Church; but that the Church would go to the World
5. What Jesus Did (10:1-5)
- He Called them to Him
- He granted them Authority
- He Sent Them Out
“And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'” (Matthew 28:18–20)
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:17–20)
Where Do I Begin?
- Where I Live
- Where I Work
- Where I Play
Three Possible Responses to the Call to Follow Christ on Mission:
- Who Me? – Doubt and fear can keep us from this daring adventure.
- Not Me – Disobedience and disregard
- Send Me – Focus on God’s ability not my inabilities.
“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here I am! Send me.'” (Isaiah 6:8)
