What Nehemiah Did flowed from who he Was

It wasn’t so much about his Charisma as it was about his Character

Characteristics of a Get-R-Done Person

1. Compassion

  • 1:4 – Wept and mourned over Jerusalem
  • 5:2-6 – His reaction to injustice
  • 5:14-18 – Personally provided for others

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”

Leadership without love can degenerate into Manipulation

2. Continual Prayer

  • 1:4-11 – Prayer and fasting
  • 2:4 – Flash prayer
  • 4:4-5 – Prayer in the face of opposition

Prayer is to be our first Response, not our last Resort

3. Contemplation

  • 2:11-16 – Nighttime inspection of the walls
  • 5:6-7 – Thinking before speaking

Thinking well is Hard Work and too many people are not willing to pay the price

4. Contagious Joy

  • 2:1 – Had not been sad before the king
  • 8:10 – “For the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
  • 12:27-43 – Dedication of the wall – “And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.” (43)

Happiness depends on Happenings; Joy is Internal

5. Concentration

  • 2:5-18 – He developed a plan
  • 3:1-32 - Organized the work
  • 6:3-4 – He refused to be distracted

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13–14)

6. Creativity

  • 2:7-8 – He anticipated problems and solutions
  • 4:13-18 – He devised a way for them to build and battle at the same time

We serve the Creator God who leads us in Creative Ways

7. Courage

  • 2:2 – Before the king
  • 4:14 – Responding to threats from an enemy
  • 5:6-13 – Confronting corruption

Courage is not the absence of fear it is Trusting and Obeying God even in the presence of fear

8. Conviction

  • 4:1-23 – He continued in the work despite opposition
  • 6:1-19 – He persisted in the face of intimidation

An Opinion is something you will argue about; a Conviction is something you will die for

9. Consecration

“The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens on the people and took from them for their daily ration forty shekels of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, because of the fear of God.” (Nehemiah 5:15)

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,” (Titus 2:11–12)

For Personal Application:

  • Which of these character qualities are strongest in my life right now?
  • Which of these character qualities are weakest in my life right now?
  • Which of these character qualities does God want to develop most in my life right now?
  • What will I do this week to cooperate with God in developing and demonstrating this character quality in my life?
