Living Joyfully:

Attitude Check:

Philippians 2:1-11

One of the most important decisions we will make on a daily basis is the choice of our attitude

How To Choose A Joyful Attitude

  1. Start With The Right Foundation (1-2)
  • Encouragement in Christ
  • Comfort in love
  • Participation/Fellowship in the Spirit
  • Compassion and Sympathy

  •  United with others

Difference between Unity and Uniformity

  1. Make The Right Choices (3-4)

Joy is being shut out of my life at the point of my Pride

Joy is invited into my life at the point of my Humility

Say “No” to:

  • Selfish Ambition

WIIFM – “What’s in it for me?”

  •  Vain Conceit

“Who is noticing me?”

Say “Yes” to:

  • The Importance of others

Humility is not about putting ourselves Down, but lifting others Up

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.” (Romans 12:3)

Humility begins with a proper understanding of God and a proper understanding of ourselves and others being created in The Image of God

  • The Interests of others

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” (Romans 12:15)

Follow The Right Example (5-11)

These verses tell us who Jesus is!

Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.” (Isaiah 45:22–23)

Four Aspects of Humility:

  • Releasing my rights (6)

This is not the same as relinquishing my identity

  • Choosing to serve (7)

It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:26–28)

  • Obeying my God (8)

And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)

  • Entrusting myself to God (9-11)

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12)

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” (James 4:10)

Joy begins with three words: Jesus Is Lord!

Making It Personal:

  • Do you personally know the joy that comes from having Jesus as Lord?
  • What do you need to say “no” to more often? What do you need to say “yes” to more often?
  • Which of the four aspects of humility that Jesus modeled do you most need to grow in right now?
