The Purpose of His Passion

Pastor: Shannon Ford Scripture: Isaiah 53:1–53:9

The Purpose of His Passion
Isaiah 53:1 – 53:9

The symbol of the religion of Jesus is the cross, not the scales. (John Stott)

All heaven is interested in the cross of Christ, all hell is terribly afraid of it, while men are the only beings who more or less ignore its meaning. (Oswald Chambers)

We need people of the cross, with the message of the cross, bearing the marks of the cross. (Vance Havner)

1.  Difficulty of Christ’s Suffering (53:1-3)

a. Christ’s message was doubted (53:1)
b. Christ was personally avoided (53:2)
c. Christ was socially rejected (53:3)

Jesus is the Despised Servant

Today’s Truth – Jesus became an ordinary person to show God’s extraordinary love to ordinary people like us.

2.  Purpose of Christ’s Suffering (53:4-6)
a. He bore our sorrows (53:4)
b. He bore our suffering (53:5)
c. He bore our sin (53:6)

Jesus is the Suffering Servant

Today’s Truth - We have heard the message of the cross so many times it fails to move us. We often forget the pain and suffering He went through for our sins.

3. Attitude of Christ’s Suffering (53:7-9)
a. He was submissive in His silence (53:7)
b. He was submissive in His suffering (53:8)
c. He was submissive in His shame (53:9)

Jesus is the Willing & Innocent Servant

Today’s Truth - Jesus became sin for us that we might have the opportunity to live with Him. He took our place that we might have a place with Him.
