The Eyes of the Lord

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: reFRESH: Familiar Verses, Fresh Insight Scripture: 2 Chronicles 14–16

The Eyes of the Lord
2 Chronicles 14-16

“Slippage” can creep into almost any area of our lives.

Lessons from an Ancient King

  1. God is Greater than any problem or challenge you will face (14)
  2. God Delights in strengthening those whose hearts are completely His (15:1-2; 16:9a)
  3. Past faithfulness does not Guarantee present or future faithfulness (14:1-4; 15:16-18; 16:7-9)
  4. What “Works” in the short term may bring Disaster in the long term (16:1-9; 12-13)
  5. Dong Right doesn’t always mean that you will be Treated Right (16:10)

Combating Slippage in My Life

1. Trusting God is moment by moment, day by day
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5–6, ESV)

“Give us this day our daily bread,” (Matthew 6:11, ESV)

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34, ESV)

2. God Values the heart; I must Guard my heart
“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7, ESV)

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23, ESV)

“Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.” (Proverbs 4:23, HCSB)

  • What’s on the Inside eventually shows up on the outside
  • Slippage takes place Quietly on the inside before it shows up Publicly on the outside

3. Where slippage has occurred I must:

  • Remember
  • Repent
  • Redo

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.”
(Revelation 2:5, ESV)

“Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.” (Revelation 3:2, ESV)

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9a, ESV)
